Chapter 9

Savannah drove the way back to the ranch listening to Ethan’s side of the conversation with his FBI contact. From what she could tell they had located the man, Slick Rick and it appeared her father was with him in Orlando.

She breathed a sigh of relief. Butch was alive. Thank god. But there was more. Seemed to Savannah there was some type of robbery or job going down. She didn’t get all of it, but it involved Butch, and the FBI informant was in on it, they were planning on busting it up before it could go down. Ethan was negotiating to have Butch spared any legal trouble. The informant made it sound like Butch was not really involved and not part of the plan of his own accord. Ah Daddy, what did you get yourself into, she thought.

They pulled into the drive of the ranch house just as Ethan’s call was finishing up.

“How much of that did you get?” he asked as they made their way into the house.

“Enough to know Butch is in trouble, but you seem pretty confident you can get him out of it safely.”

“So far, that’s the plan,” he said. “Everything is supposed to go down in an old warehouse tomorrow night downtown Orlando. Smith is letting me join in, he owes me a favor or two. I’ll pull Butch out before anything bad happens then the feds will swoop in and make their arrests. The whole thing will be over before it starts.”

How could he be so confident? Savannah thought. She set her bags down on the kitchen counter and took a couple deep breaths. So many things could go wrong. She could end up losing the only two men in the world she loved and Ethan seemed like it was as easy as a trip to Disney World.

Love? Did she love Ethan? Savannah realized in that moment listening to him explain the plan to her in vivid detail, she did. She had loved him for as long as she could remember, and she would have been content never showing him that love but now when faced with the reality of losing him, and her father, it was too much for her to bear. The room began to spin, and she felt the need to sit. She moved to the sofa, blindly. Tears began to roll down her cheeks. She could hear Ethan talking to her, but her brain couldn’t register any of his words. Unable to control her body as it was wracked by sobs. This must be what sheer terror feels like, she thought as her body shook.
